On this day, 88 years ago, on January 12, 1937 (November 30, 1936, the Red Army's West Route Army was "surrounded and suppressed" by the Kuomintang. On January 12, 1937, the Kuomintang troops following Ma Bufang and Ma Buqing of the West Route Army of the Red Army used a part of their troops to clamp down on the Ninth and 30th Armies of the West Route Army in the Linjin area, and concentrated about 5 brigades of troops. They began to storm Gaotai City, the headquarters of the Fifth Army on all sides. Dong Zhentang, commander of the Fifth Army, commanded the troops to fight bloody battles. After a week of bloody battles, more than 3000 people from the two main regiments of the Fifth Army, the cavalry regiment, and the headquarters secret service regiment were all killed. Commander Dong Zhentang and Director of the Political Department Yang Keming died heroically. On January 21, the leaders of the West Route Army telegraphed to the Central Military Commission and decided to return east with the remaining 14,000 people.
