Breaking-News >> TodayHistory 13 January 1967 Togo Liberation Day (overthrow of the Grunizki government)
On this day, 58 years ago, January 13, 1967 (December 3, 1966 in the lunar calendar), Togo Liberation Day (overthrowing the Grunizki government). When Ghana became independent in 1957, the British trusteeship of western Togo was merged into Ghana. In August 1956, eastern Togo became an "autonomous republic" within the French Community. It became independent on April 27, 1960 and was named the Togolese Republic. In April 1961, the Togolese Republic held a general election, and Orincio of the Togolese Unity Party was elected president and announced that he would not participate in the "French Community". On January 13, 1963, a military coup took place in Togo. Orincio, who had conflicts with France, was killed, and an interim government with Grunitsky as prime minister was established. In May of the same year, Togo held presidential and National Assembly elections and a referendum to approve the new constitution, and Grunitki was elected president. On January 13, 1967, the Togolese army, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Etienne Eyadema, launched a coup d'état, dismissed Grunitki, dissolved the parliament, abolished the constitution, and formed an interim government. In April, Eyadema took up the post as president and formed a new government. In May, it was announced that all political parties were dissolved. January 13, 1967 was later designated as the "National Liberation Day of the Togolese Republic".
