May 11, 1985 Fire at Bradford Stadium in England
40 years ago today, on May 11, 1985 (March 22, 1985 in the lunar calendar), a fire broke out at Bradford Stadium in the United Kingdom. On May 11, 1985, the wooden stands during the game between the City and Lincoln City teams at Bradford Football Stadium in northern England were set on fire, killing 56 people. The fire started when a cigarette or a match ignited garbage piled up under the stands. Within minutes of the fire, tar from the ceiling melted and dripped down, making the stadium a hell on earth. Most of the deaths occurred in the back of the stands, where emergency exits could not be opened.
