Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On June 14, 2013, our country analytical chemist Gao Hong academician passed away
On June 14, 2013 (May 7, 2013, the Chinese analytical chemist Academician Gao Hong passed away. One of the founders of my country's modern instrumental analysis discipline, analytical chemist and educator, senior academician of China Academy of Sciences, national expert with outstanding contributions, member of China Democratic League, tenured professor of Northwestern University and Nanjing University, and specially invited advisory member of the Shaanxi Province Government Decision Advisory Committee, Academician Gao Hong died in Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province at 11:22 on June 14, 2013 at the age of 95. Academician Gao Hong was born in Jingyang, Shaanxi Province on June 26, 1918. He graduated from the former National Central University in 1943. In February 1945, he went to the University of Illinois to specialize in analytical chemistry, and won two golden keys for his outstanding performance. In 1947, he obtained a doctorate in chemistry and stayed in school to work. In 1948, he declined his mentor's retention and resolutely returned to the motherland with a pure heart, serving as an associate professor in the Department of Chemistry of the former National Central University. After liberation, he served successively as associate professor, professor, and tenured professor at Nanjing University, and was identified as one of the first batch of doctoral guidance teachers in the country. In November 1980, he was elected as a member (academician) of the Department of Chemistry of China Academy of Sciences. In 1992, he returned to his hometown and was employed as a tenured professor at Northwest University. He has successively served as chairman of the Academic Degree Evaluation Committee of Northwest University, honorary director of the Institute of Analytical Sciences of Northwest University, and director of the Key Laboratory of Electroanalytical Chemistry of Shaanxi Province. Academician Gao Hong has far-sighted vision, rigorous research, and careful cultivation of talents. He has always been committed to research in cutting-edge fields of analytical chemistry. He has participated in the formulation of national scientific plans for basic disciplines many times, making indelible contributions to the construction of analytical chemistry in my country. As early as the mid-1950s, in response to the country's urgent need for analytical chemistry talents and instrumental analysis textbooks, Academician Gao Hong devoted himself to compiling my country's first textbook "Instrument Analysis", creating a precedent for instrument analysis education in my country. "Theory of Polarographic Current" compiled by him is the first monograph on polarography theory in my country and won the first prize for National Outstanding Books in 1988;"Oscillographic Titration","Oscillographic Titration" and "Oscillographic Drug Analysis" are the world's first monographs in the field of oscillographic analysis, of which "Oscillographic Titration" won the special prize for outstanding academic works in higher education. He used a dialectical perspective to think about "what special contradictions in analytical chemistry research", and elaborated on the development trend of analytical chemistry at many national science planning conferences and national academic conferences, promoting the development of analytical chemistry in my country. At the end of the last century, Academician Gao Hong gave a keynote report on "Current Situation and Future of Analytical Chemistry" at the Symposium on Frontiers and Education of Analytical Chemistry. This report and more than 20 other reports have been compiled into the book "Frontiers of Analytical Chemistry", which has become a guide for my country's analytical chemistry community to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Academician Gao Hong has made outstanding contributions to the basic theoretical and applied research of electrochemistry and electroanalytical chemistry in my country, and has a world-renowned reputation. He has published more than 300 scientific papers, and his scientific research results have won the National Natural Science Award many times, and won the 2002 "He Liang He Li Foundation Science and Technology Progress Award". He successfully solved the verification problem of the diffusion current formula of the spherical electrode and solved long-standing outstanding problems in polarographic analysis. He proposed and verified the diffusion current formula for a spherical amalgam electrode. He proposed a new method for measuring the diffusion coefficient of metals in mercury, and based on this method, he measured the diffusion coefficients of 16 metals in mercury, clarifying the confusion of data in academic literature. He deduced a series of polarographic current formulas (especially the catalytic current theory) and verified them, solving some important basic theoretical problems in modern polarographic analysis. The relevant achievements in basic research on modern polarographic analysis have won the 1978 National Science Conference Award and the third prize of the 1982 National Natural Science Award. He pioneered a new electrical analysis technology, oscillographic analysis, and opened it up into a new field of analysis. This technology has been promoted and applied in chemical analysis, drug analysis and other fields, and has achieved great success. The research results related to oscillographic titration won the second prize in Science and Technology Progress Award of the State Education Commission in 1986 and the third prize of the National Natural Science Award in 1991. Academician Gao Hong enjoys high prestige in academic circles at home and abroad. He has served as a member of the Discipline Evaluation Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, a member of the Chemical Discipline Evaluation Group and leader of the Analytical Chemistry Group of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, a member of the Discipline Evaluation Group of the National Natural Science Award Committee, a member of the Chemical Discipline Group of the State Science and Technology Commission, and a member of the Central Science and Technology Committee of the Democratic League. He served successively as the first president of the former Central University Alumni Association, vice chairman and executive director of several national sexology societies, member of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, and the international journal of analytical chemistry "Trends Anal.Chem." He is a consultant editor, standing editorial board, editorial board or consultant to many national journals such as Analytical Chemistry, Journal of Chemistry of Colleges and Universities, and Metallurgical Analysis. Academician Gao Hong also has good painting skills while doing experiments in the laboratory. This is one of the two remaining watercolor paintings.
