Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On February 6, 1998, Ecuadorian President Bukalam was dismissed
Twenty-seven years ago today, on February 6, 1998 (January 10, 1998 in the lunar calendar), Ecuadorian President Bucaram was removed. On the evening of February 6, 1998, the National Assembly of Ecuador removed the current President Bucaram on the grounds of "not good at governing the country", and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alarcón, became the interim president of Ecuador. In the early morning of February 7, Vice President Ateaga issued a decree to proclaim himself the interim president. Due to Bucaram's refusal to hand over presidential powers, Ecuadorian politics was in chaos with the "three princes of one country". On February 9, Alarcón announced his resignation, and the parliament approved Ateaga to temporarily exercise presidential powers. On Feb. 10, Ms. Ateaga said she was willing to accept Parliament's decision and hand over power to an interim president re-elected by Parliament. On Feb. 11, after being appointed by Parliament, Mr. Alarcón was sworn in as interim president again. On the same day, Mr. Bucaram, who was removed from office by Parliament, left for Panama.
