On January 28, 1997, our country's first international land optical cable was officially opened
On this day, 28 years ago, on January 28, 1997 (December 20, 1996, the lunar calendar), my country's first international terrestrial optical cable was officially opened. On January 28, 1997, Harbin, the northern city of my country, and Khabarovsk, the far eastern city of Russia, ended the long-term history of connecting communications via Beijing and Moscow. Television images of the opening ceremony of the China-Russia optical cable were directly transmitted to each other through optical cables, which also marked the official opening of my country's first international land optical cable. The China-Russia optical cable runs from Harbin via Fuyuan across the Wusuri River on the Sino-Russian border to Khabarovsk, Russia. It has a total length of 970 kilometers, including 820 kilometers in China. It is connected to Beijing and Moscow through their respective domestic communication systems, and is connected to other international optical cables around the world, forming part of the international optical cable. The completion and opening of the China-Russia optical cable will promote political, economic and cultural exchanges between the two countries and friendly exchanges between the two peoples, and greatly improve and promote international communications business between China and Russia.
