Breaking-News >> TodayHistory The birthday of Lao Tzu, founder of the Taoist school
Lao Tzu (born at dawn on February 25th, Gengchen, Wuding Dynasty, in the late Western Zhou Dynasty), has the surname Li and his name is Er, and the word Dan (the first sound of dan). He was a Han nationality from Ku County, Chu (now Zhoukou Luyi County, Henan). He was a great philosopher and thinker in ancient China, the founder of the Taoist school, and a celebrity in world culture. Lao Tzu is also known as Laodan. It is said that he was born with white eyebrows and white beard, so he is called Lao Tzu. Lao Tzu lived in the Spring and Autumn Period and served as a Tibetan historian (equivalent to the director of the National Library) in Luoyi, the capital of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (now Luoyang, Henan). He was knowledgeable and talented. When Confucius traveled around various countries, he once went to Luoyang to ask Lao Tzu for courtesy. In his later years, Lao Tzu rode a green ox to the west and wrote a 5,000-word "Tao Te Jing"(also known as "Lao Tzu") in front of Hangu Pass (located in today's Lingbao, Henan), but he did not know where it ended. Tao Te Ching contains rich dialectical thoughts. Lao Tzu's philosophy and ancient Greek philosophy constitute two peaks of human philosophy. Lao Tzu is also respected as the "Father of China Philosophy" because of his profound philosophical thoughts. Lao Tzu's thoughts were inherited by Zhuangzi and, together with Confucianism and later Buddhist thoughts, formed the core of China's traditional thought and culture. After the emergence of Taoism, Lao Tzu was revered as the "Supreme Lao Lord"; since the Biography of Liexian Immortals, Lao Tzu has been revered as an immortal. Since the Han Dynasty, emperors of successive dynasties began to go to Luyi, Henan Province to worship Lao Tzu. There are more than a thousand foreign editions of Tao Te Ching, and it is the China book that has been translated into the most languages.
