On this day, 82 years ago, on February 13, 1943 (January 9, 1943), the Japanese army handed over the skull of Tang Xuanzang to the Wang puppet government. On February 13, 1943, the Japanese army handed over part of the skull of the Tang monk Xuanzang to the Wang puppet government. The skull was discovered in November 1942. On this day, the construction site of the Japanese army's military repair factory next to the Yuhuatai outside the Zhonghua Gate in Nanjing sent a dozen workers to level the land on the hill behind the Sanzang Temple in the south of the factory, ready to build the so-called "Rice Lotus Shrine". At around 10 am, the workers were digging hard and heard a "click" sound. They peeled open the soil and found a rectangular stone strip. A few workers lifted up the stone strips and saw a hole with a stone letter inside. The inscriptions on both sides of the stone letter were vaguely recognizable, briefly explaining how Tang Xuan's remains came to Ning for burial. The foreman's Japanese soldiers discovered this situation and immediately rushed to the factory department to report. A group of Japanese troops arrived and surrounded everyone. After searching everyone one by one, they drove everyone away and announced a three-day suspension of work. In the afternoon, the Japanese army put the hill under martial law and blocked the news. After further excavation, a small copper niche was found under the stone letter. The words "Tang Sanzang" were engraved outside the niche. There was a glazed incense burner inside the niche, and the furnace contained the top bone of Xuanzang, which was about 2 inches wide and 4 inches long. At the same time, a gold Buddha statue, gold and silver boxes, stone caskets, brass Buddha utensils, magnets, upper ornaments, jewelry, and many other burial treasures were also dug up. The Japanese army also found 28 ancient copper coins around the stone letter and in the grass, which are said to represent the "Twenty-Eighth Sukaku" (one said to represent Xuanzang's death after the 28 emperors of the Tang Dynasty, Song Dynasty, Yuan and Ming Dynasty). Although the Japanese army strictly blocked the news, the news of the excavation of the top bone of the Tang monk in the Sanzang Temple still leaked out. The Wang puppet government repeatedly negotiated with the Japanese side under the pressure of public opinion. Finally, the Japanese army reluctantly agreed to return it due to political considerations. On February 13, the two sides held a ceremony in Nanjing to hand over the Buddhist bone of Master Xuanzang, which was handed over by Ambassador Chongguang Kui of Japan to Chu Minyi, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairperson of the Cultural Rel News raw data sources → https://www.abtool.cn/today_detail/1zjo.html 17WorldNews[2025.09.28-06:47] 访问:66
