April 12, 1919 The first Saturday voluntary labor in Soviet Russia
106 years ago today, April 12, 1919 (March 12, 1919 in the lunar calendar), Soviet Russia carried out voluntary labor on Saturday for the first time. In the spring of 1919, Allied imperialism used Kolchak to launch the first large-scale armed intervention in Soviet Russia, and the Soviet regime was at a critical juncture. Workers in the rear actively responded to the call of the Party and Lenin and stepped up their work to support the front line. April 12, 1919 was Saturday. On April 12, 13 Communist Party members and 2 other workers in the engine garage of the Moscow marshalling station of the Moscow-Kazan Railway repaired three locomotives after a night of voluntary work. After the news spread, there was a huge response. Communist Party members of the Moscow Kazan Railway Branch decided to organize mass Saturday voluntary labor activities. On May 10, a total of more than 200 Communist Party members participated in voluntary labor. Following the Communist Party members, non-Communist Party members and workers from all over the country also used Saturday voluntary labor to support the front line. Lenin spoke highly of this movement and considered it a "great initiative."
