General De Rivera was like the one who was 60 years old until General Primo De Rivera, the Spanish dictator who stepped down six weeks ago, died in his Paris residence on March 16, 1930. Drivera's rise to power was largely due to his resolution of a French Morocco uprising against Spanish interests, where the Moorish tribe had routed a modern Spanish force of 20,000. Drivera went to Africa to supervise the war personally, and his final success made him a national hero. Drivera vowed that his dictatorship would last only for three months. He carried out economic reforms at home, reduced unemployment and introduced public facilities to facilitate the country's modernization. As his popularity increased, his rule extended from three months to six years. Spain began to become unstable under De Rivera's autocratic rule. He lost the king's support and resigned in February.
