The Shanghai World Expo opened on April 30, 2010

From November 29 to December 5, 2002, Li Lanqing, then member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council, led a China delegation to participate in the 132nd Plenary Session of the International Exhibition Bureau and made a bid statement. On December 3, 2002, China was awarded the right to host the 2010 World Expo through a vote of the General Assembly of the International Bureau of Exhibitions. On April 30, China President Hu Jintao and his wife Liu Yongqing welcomed French President Sarkozy and his wife Bruni in Shanghai, who attended the opening ceremony of the World Expo.
