On February 16, 1935, the Red Army achieved its first major victory since the Long March
On this day 90 years ago, on February 16, 1935 (January 13, 1935 lunar calendar), the Red Army achieved its first major victory since the Long March. On February 16, 1935, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Central Military Commission issued the "Letter to All Red Soldiers", deciding to stop the development of northern Sichuan and establish revolutionary base areas in the three provinces of Sichuan, Guizhou and Yunnan. On February 24, the Central Red Army, which gave up the plan to cross the Yangtze River north and advance eastward through the Red Water for the second time, took the initiative to launch the Zunyi Campaign while the Guizhou Kuomintang Army was empty. The Central Red Army defeated a regiment of the Qian Army, regained Tongzi, and opened the prelude to the Zunyi Campaign. On the 26th, the Red Army conquered the natural danger of Loushan Pass. On the 28th, it captured Zunyi City again and annihilated two divisions of the Qian Army. Chiang Kai-shek urgently dispatched Wu Qiwei's column of the Central Army from the south bank of the Wujiang River to help Zunyi. The Central Military Commission ordered the Red 1st and Red 3rd Corps to meet the attack in two directions, and severely damaged Wu Qiwei's column on the front lines of Laoya Mountain and Zhongzhuangpu, ending the Battle of Zunyi. The battle lasted 6 days, wiped out 20 enemy regiments, captured 3,000 enemy men, and achieved the first major victory since the Long March.
