Thirty-six years ago today, on February 26, 1989 (January 21, 1989 lunar calendar), China's Antarctic Zhongshan Station was inaugurated on the coast of the Rasman Hills. This is the second scientific research station built by China in the Antarctic after the Great Wall Station. In early October 1988, our country sent an advance team to Antarctica with the Australian "Icebird" research ship and boarded the Rasman Hills. The geographical environment, natural conditions, freshwater resources and topographic characteristics of the pre-selected station area were investigated on the spot, and it was believed that the conditions for building websites in the Rasman Hills were better than those in Amundsen Bay. Based on the field survey report of the advance team, the Antarctic Commission finally determined that Zhongshan Station was built in the Rasman Hills. The Zhongshan Station in Antarctica was built on February 26, 1989 and was named after Mr. Sun Yat-sen, the great pioneer of the Chinese democratic revolution. Zhongshan Station is located on the Vistoden Peninsula in the Rasman Hills of Princess Elizabeth on the East Antarctic Continent. Its geographical coordinates are 69 degrees 22 minutes 24 seconds south latitude and 76 degrees 22 minutes 40 seconds east longitude. It is 12,553.160 kilometers away from Beijing and has an azimuth angle of 32 degrees 30 minutes 50 seconds with Beijing. The Rasman Hills where Zhongshan Station is located are located within the Antarctic Circle, on the southeast coast of Prydz Bay, and a few hundred kilometers southwest from the Emery Ice Shelf and the Prince Charles Mountains. It is an ideal area for marine Antarctic and continental scientific investigations. Not far from Zhongshan Station are Australia's Labor Base and Russia's Progress Station.
