67 years ago today, on April 29, 1958 (March 11, 1958 in the lunar calendar), Egypt agreed to repay the share capital of the Canal Company. On April 29, 1958, an agreement was initialled in Rome in which Egypt agreed to pay more than $81 million in five-year instalments to shareholders of the Suez Canal to compensate Egypt for its occupation of the canal. The British government owns 40% of the shares, with the rest owned by 130,000 French people.
