German mathematician Gauss died on February 23, 1855
170 years ago today, on February 23, 1855 (January 7, 1855 lunar calendar), the German mathematician Gauss died. JohannCarlFriedrichGauss (April 30, 1777 - February 23, 1855), born in Brunswick, died in Göttingen, a famous German mathematician, physicist, astronomer, and geodesy scientist. Gauss is considered the most important mathematician and has a reputation as the Prince of Mathematics. In 1792, at the age of 15, De Gauss entered the Braunschweig Academy. There, Gauss began his research on higher mathematics. Independently discovered the general form of the binomial theorem, the "quadratic reciprocity law" in number theory, the theorem of the distribution of prime numbers, and the arithmetic geometric mean. In 1795 Gauss entered the University of Göttingen. In 1796, at the age of 17, Gauss obtained an extremely important result in the history of mathematics, "The Theory and Method of Drawing Regular Seventeen Gauges", which provided the first important addition to Euclidean geometry that had been passed down for 2000 years since ancient Greek times. In 1807 Gauss became a professor at the University of Göttingen and director of the local observatory. With the help of his theory of measurement adjustment based on the least squares method, Gauss solved the orbit of the celestial body. And using this method, he discovered the orbit of Ceres. Ceres was discovered in 1801 by the Italian astronomer Piazzi, but he delayed his observations due to illness and lost the track of the asteroid. Piazzi named it after the "Harvest Muse" (Ceres) in Greek mythology, that is, Ceres (PlanetoidenCeres), and published the location of the previous observations, hoping that astronomers around the world would find it together. Gauss calculated the orbit of Ceres from three previous observations. The Austrian astronomer Heinrich Olbers successfully discovered the asteroid in Gauss's calculated orbit. From then on, Gauss became famous all over the world. Gauss wrote this method in his book "The Theory of Celestial Motion". He died in Göttingen on the early morning of February 23, 1855.
