Fifty-six years ago today, on February 2, 1969 (December 16, 1968 lunar calendar), our country's famous mathematician Xiong Qinglai passed away. Xiong Qinglai is like Xiong Qinglai (1893.9.11~ 1969) Chinese mathematician, educator, and cultivator of modern mathematics, Maitreya native of Yunnan Province, character Dizhi. In 1911, he entered the Higher School of Yunnan Province to study, and in 1913 he went to Belgium to study mining. From 1915 to 1920, he studied at Glennobel University in France and the University of Montpellier to obtain a master of science degree. In 1921, he returned to China and served as a professor at Nanjing Southeast University, Nanjing Higher Normal University and Tsinghua University. In 1931, he went to France again to study, specializing in function theory. In 1933, he received a doctorate in science from the University of Paris in France. He returned to China in 1934 and is still teaching at Tsinghua University. In 1937, he served as the president of Yunnan University. In 1949, he attended the UNESCO conference held in Paris, and then stayed in France to engage in mathematical research. In 1957, Xiong Qinglai returned from Paris under the kind care of Premier Zhou Enlai, regardless of the lure and threat of the Taiwan authorities, and served as a researcher, academic member, director of the Functional Theory Research Office of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. In his old age, Xiong Qinglai "dedicated himself to the academic career of the motherland" with his disability but not waste, and trained two internationally renowned mathematicians, Yang Le and Zhang Guanghou. Xiong Qinglai died on February 2, 1969, and was buried in the Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery. He was mainly engaged in the research work of function theory, and defined an "infinite order function", which is internationally known as "Xiong's infinite number". He died on February 2, 1969.
