In 1896, Adolf Ochs, the owner of The Chattanooga Times, came to New York with the ambition to become a publisher of newspapers in the big city. Before that, he learned from a reporter that The New York Times was going to be auctioned off. By then, its circulation had dropped to 9,000 copies, losing $1,000 a day. Ochs bought control of The Times with his only $75,000, most of it borrowed. Among his sponsors was J-P-Mo. Mr. Ochs announced that he would publish the news "boldly and impartially." By the time he died today at the age of 77, the paper's circulation was close to 500,000 a day, and more than 700,000 on Sundays.
