He suffered from polio at the age of three, and his legs have since been disabled. After graduating from junior high school, Wang Jiangmin returned to Shandong to teach himself mechanical and optoelectronic knowledge. In 1979, he was awarded the title of pacesetter of the new Long March for his achievements in lasers. In 1988, Wang Jiangmin taught himself computer and programming, and soon became an expert in computer security in China.
