On this day, 163 years ago, on July 30, 1862 (July 4, 1862, the lunar calendar), Xu Shou and Hua Hengfang collaborated to build a ship turbine. On July 30, 1862, the ship and turbine jointly built by Xu Shou and Hua Hengfang was tested in Anqing. Xu Shou (1818-1884) and Hua Hengfang (1833-1902) were both from Wuxi, Jiangsu. At the beginning of 1862, both of them were sponsored by Zeng Guofan and joined the Anqing Inner Ordnance Institute. The two worked together, referring to foreign literature and materials, Xu Shou designed it and Hua Hengfang deduced and calculated it, provided accurate data, and built a ship turbine. This is the first steam engine made by China in modern times. The audition was successful on July 30, and both of them were named "Extraordinary Talents". In January 1864, the two worked together to build a wood-shelled ship, the "Yellow Hu", with a length of more than 50 feet and a speed of more than 40 miles per hour. It was the first ship designed by China itself. Hua Hengfang, who liked to learn arithmetic since he was a child, once translated Western scientific and technological works at the Shanghai Mohai Library. In 1859, he wrote "A Brief Introduction to Parabolic", which was the first mathematical work in modern China and brought together the crystallization of Chinese and Western mathematics. After transferring from Anqing Internal Ordnance Institute to Jiangnan Manufacturing General Administration, he devoted himself to translation work and translated 17 books such as Algebra, Trigonometric Number Theory, and Microproduct Traceability. He became a rare mathematician in China at that time. Hua Shi has also taught in Shanghai Gezhi Academy, Hubei Ziqiang School, Tianjin Wubei School and other schools, cultivating a group of scientific and technological talents. There are 6 kinds of works,"Xingsuxuan Suanwen", of which "Opening Prescriptions and Other Methods" was promoted as "unprecedented work" by the famous mathematics scholar Li Shanlan at that time. Xu Shou, when he was young, decided that the imperial examinations were "impractical" and changed to astronomy and arithmetic, and was especially fond of making instruments. In 1865, he was appointed as the assistant director of Jiangnan Manufacturing General Administration. It is recommended to establish a translation hall to translate Western natural science and engineering technology books. Xu Shou has been engaged in translation for 17 years and has translated books such as "Chemical Jian Yuan","Chemical Kao Zhi","Objects Change in Heat", etc., which systematically introduced the main contents of chemical knowledge at that time. He became a famous chemist in Asia at that time. In September 1868, he and his son scientist Xu Jianyin built the No. 1 fiery ship "Tianji"(with a load of 600 tons) at the Jiangnan Manufacturing Bureau. During the trial voyage, it caused a sensation in Shanghai. In 1874, Xu Shou and a Westerner Fu Lanya founded Gezhi Academy in Shanghai to collect jade utensils from various countries to provide students with postgraduate entrance examinations. This is the first modern physics and chemistry college in China. Xu Shou played a pioneering role in the development and dissemination of modern chemistry in my country.
