On this day, 36 years ago, April 28, 1989 (March 23, 1989 in the lunar calendar), the World Basketball Series was open to professional players. The addition of professional players represented by Jordan promoted the improvement of the level of international basketball. On April 28, 1989, the FIBA decided at its congress held in Munich that professional athletes would be allowed to participate in competitions organized by the FIBA in the future. Representatives attending the conference came from 70 countries and regions. After voting, the above decision was adopted with 56 votes in favor and 13 votes against. Under the new regulations, professional basketball players can participate in all competitions recognized by the International Basketball Federation, including the Olympics and World Championships. Representatives of the Soviet Union proposed at the meeting that the number of professional athletes participating in international competitions should be limited to two, but it was rejected after the vote.
