Singapore became a British Crown Colony

Singapore map
On April 1, 1867, Singapore became a Crown Colony of the United Kingdom. Under the direct jurisdiction of the colonial office in London.
The modern history of Singapore dates back to the early 19th century. The British were expanding their territory in India and trade with China. They urgently needed a port where their ships could be berthed and repaired to gain an advantage in the trade competition with the Dutch. In late 1818, Governor Raffles established a new trading port on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. On January 29, 1819, Raffles landed on the main island of Singapore and found that Singapore had excellent conditions for developing into a port. The waters in the south were spacious and rarely affected by storms, and the nearby streams had abundant water sources to provide drinking water.
Initially, Singapore was under the jurisdiction of the colonial authorities of British India. By 1820, Singapore began to generate profits for the British Empire. In 1824, Singapore's colonial status was further established, two new treaties were formally signed, and it became a Strait colony in 1826. In 1832, Singapore became the seat of the Straits Colonial Government. On April 1, 1867, it officially became a Crown Colony of the United Kingdom, under the direct jurisdiction of the Colonial Office in London. By the beginning of the 20th century, Singapore had risen from a swamp-covered wasteland to the seventh largest port in the world.
