Fifty years ago today, on April 23, 1975 (March 12, 1975), the South Vietnamese cabinet resigned, and the US president declared the end of the Vietnam War. After the signing of the Geneva Accords on the restoration of peace in Indochina in 1954, the United States gradually replaced France in colonial rule in southern Vietnam. In order to thwart the unification of Vietnam and occupy the south for a long time, in 1961, the United States launched a "special war" in which American military advisers commanded the South Vietnamese puppet army, and later sent troops to participate directly in the war in southern Vietnam. As a result, the US puppet group suffered a failure to repair on the battlefield, and was forced to sign the "Agreement on Ending the War and Restoring Peace Before Time" in Paris on January 27, 1973. After the withdrawal of US troops from South Vietnam, the southern puppet group violated the Paris Agreement, refused to achieve national harmony, and encroached on the liberated areas of South Vietnam. In March 1975, the Vietnamese military and civilians launched the Spring Offensive; on April 23, 1975, the cabinet of the South Vietnamese puppet group resigned, and US President Ford declared the end of the Vietnam War. The Vietnamese military and civilians liberated Saigon on April 30 and the entire South Vietnam on May 1, completely destroying the South Vietnamese regime.
