On this day, 71 years ago, April 29, 1954 (March 27, 1954, the lunar calendar), China and India established the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence. Premier Zhou Enlai held talks with Prime Minister Nehru (third from left) On April 29, 1954, the governments of China and India signed the "Agreement between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of India on Trade and Transportation between China's Xizang Places and India," which stipulated five principles for relations between the two countries: mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity; mutual non-aggression; non-interference in each other's internal affairs; equality and mutual benefit; Peaceful coexistence. From December 1953 to April 1954, Chinese and Indian government delegations held negotiations in Beijing on China-India relations. Premier Zhou Enlai proposed these five principles on the first day of the negotiations. On June 28, 1954, when Premier Zhou Enlai visited India, he and Indian Prime Minister Nehru issued the "Joint Statement of the Prime Ministers of China and India" in New Delhi to reiterate these five principles guiding the relations between the two countries. On June 29, 1954, Premier Zhou Enlai visited Myanmar and issued the "Joint Statement of the Prime Ministers of China and Myanmar" with Prime Minister U Nu, confirming the Five Principles as the guiding principles for international relations. Since then, the Five Principles have been accepted by many countries in the world and have become the basic norms for handling mutual relations between countries.
