Sixty years ago today, on August 27, 1965 (August 1, 1965 in the lunar calendar), Corbière, a pioneer of modern architecture and art, passed away. Corbiseer helped design the United Nations Building. On August 27, 1965, the architect Le Corbiseer, whose influence on today is comparable to only Frank L. Wright and Mies Van der Rohe, unfortunately died of a heart attack while swimming on the Riviera. He was 77. Le Corbisière was born in Switzerland, his original name was Charles Edouard Jeanne Gerry. He moved to Paris in 1917. To separate his architectural and painting careers, he adopted a pseudonym-the surname of his maternal grandmother's family-Corbière. He became famous in the 1920s. At that time, his plan for the League of Nations buildings in Geneva was selected twice by the architectural jury, but twice it was overturned because officials of the League of Nations made trouble about details. He designed less than a hundred buildings, but they had a great impact on architecture and urban planning. The ventilated windows he designed for the Ministry of Education building in Rio de Janeiro are widely imitated. His only building in the United States, the Harvard University Center for Visual Arts, was completed in 1963. After World War II, he became increasingly withdrawn, but his influence on modern architecture continued unabated until his death.
