Fifty years ago today, on May 19, 1975 (April 9, 1975 in the lunar calendar), Shi Chuanxiang, a famous national model worker, passed away unjustly. In 1915, Shi Chuanxiang was born in a poor peasant family in Qihe County, Shandong Province. Because his family was unable to maintain a living, he fled from famine to Beijing in 1929 and became a dung picker. In the old society, he spent more than 20 years digging out manure for the dung bully. In 1952, Shi Chuanxiang worked as a manure picker in the cleaning team of Chongwen District, Beijing City. In 1954, he was selected as an advanced producer. In 1956, he was elected as the People's Representative of Chongwen District. In June of the same year, he gloriously joined the Communist Party of China. In 1959, the Party Central Committee and the State Council held a national "Heroes Conference" in Beijing. Not only did he become an advanced producer in the country, but he was also elected as a member of the presidium of the "Heroes Association". During the conference, Liu Shaoqi and Zhou Enlai cordially received him. During the "Ten Years of Riots", Shi Chuanxiang was persecuted and disabled by the counter-revolutionary groups of Lin Biao and Jiang Qing, and was repatriated to his original place of origin. In August 1973, Zhou Enlai was very angry after learning the news and instructed that someone should immediately be sent to take him back to Beijing for medical treatment. In September, Shi Chuanxiang was taken back to Beijing. Due to severe physical and mental damage and ineffective medical treatment, he passed away unjustly on May 19, 1975 at the age of 60.
