Forty-nine years ago today, on January 23, 1976 (December 23, 1975 lunar calendar), Paul Robertson, a black American singer, passed away. On January 23, 1976, at the age of 77, Paul Robertson died in Philadelphia, and one of the most influential black performers and political figures in the United States disappeared. Robertson was as burly and muscular as an All-American football star. He studied at Rutgers University and was a leading figure. He was also the best baritone singer and most impressive actor at the time. He played the most memorable Othello. And his singing of "Old Man River" in the movie "Uncle Tom's Cabin" left a deep impression on Chinese audiences. An advocate of socialism, Robertson went there to sing for members of the International Column during the Spanish Civil War. He accepted the Stalin Peace Prize in 1952 for his adherence to socialist ideology and public praise of the Soviet Union. Robertson was ostracized at home during the Cold War and during the McCarthy trial.
