April 27, 1941: Greek troops surrendered to the Axis Powers
On this day, 84 years ago, on April 27, 1941 (April 2, 1941 in the lunar calendar), the Greek army surrendered to the Axis Powers. On April 27, 1941, the German army invaded Athens. The Greek army has collapsed, and the German air force is still dropping bombs on the lone resistance in the port area and on the outskirts of the capital. The Greek government has fled to Crete, where its first meeting was held in Chania. There was still heavy fighting 25 miles west of Athens as tenacious Australia troops were covering the rear of the British Expeditionary Force. The British army, defeated by the Germans, attempted to escape into the Gulf of Corinth and withdrew most of its weapons and equipment, but many of them had been captured by the Germans. The Greek guerrillas later dealt a big blow to Germany
