The coup d'état took place in Grenada on March 13, 1979
On this day 46 years ago, on March 13, 1979 (February 15, 1979 lunar calendar), a coup d'état took place in Grenada. Grenada is located at the southernmost tip of the Windward Islands in the eastern Caribbean Sea, the capital of St. George, with a total area of 344 square kilometers and a 110,000 population. The main residents are black and mulatto people. In February 1974, it declared independence and became an independent country of the Commonwealth, with Eric Gehry as Prime Minister. The island is the gateway of the Caribbean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean, guarding the throat of the Panama Canal from southern Africa and South America. It is strategically important. It is 2,500 kilometers away from the United States, and the United States has always regarded Grenada as an important link in its chain of control over Latin America. On March 13, 1979, the "New Jewel Movement" (the name of the party) led by Bishop launched an armed coup to overthrow the pro-Western Gehry government. Bishop had declared his party to be socialist. With the support of the Soviet Union and Cuba, the new regime in Grenada was increasingly pro-Soviet and Cuban. On October 12, 1983, Deputy Prime Minister Colder launched a military coup and placed Bishop under house arrest. On the 19th, thousands of people demonstrated and clashed with the military. Bishop and three ministers were killed by the military. On the 20th, the military announced the establishment of a revolutionary committee headed by Army Commander Austin to take over the country. In order to contain the influence of the Soviet Union and Gu in this region, the United States took advantage of another coup d'état within Georgia and the chaotic situation to gather seven Caribbean countries in Central America and launch an armed invasion of Grenada code-named "Rage". In the early morning of October 25, 1983, nearly 2,000 US Marines and Army officers, escorted by aircraft carriers and helicopters, suddenly landed in Grenada. Along with the US army, 300 armed personnel from six countries including Barbados and Antigua, which are adjacent to Grenada, landed. The US invasion of Grenada has aroused strong condemnation from countries around the world. Many countries consider this action by the United States to be a serious violation of a sovereign country and demand that all foreign troops withdraw from Grenada immediately. On November 3 of the same year, American troops began withdrawing from Grenada.
