On this day 51 years ago, on January 18, 1974 (December 26, 1973 lunar calendar), Mao Zedong launched the "Criticism of Forests and Confucius" movement. On January 18, 1974, Mao Zedong distributed the document No. 1 of 1974 of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, and forwarded the "Lin Biao and the Dao of Confucius and Mencius" (one of the materials) selected by Jiang Qing, and the whole country began the "Criticism of Forests and Confucius" movement. Mao Zedong believed that Lin Biao's rightist tilt was related to Lin Biao's private advocacy of the Dao of Confucius and Mencius, and wanted to use "Criticism of Forests and Confucius" to unify the understanding of the whole party. After May 1973, he repeatedly proposed "criticizing Confucius and Qiu" and "criticizing and respecting Kong and opposing the law". Jiang Qing and others took over this slogan and instructed Chi Qun and Xie Jingyi to set up "Great Criticism Groups" at Tsinghua University and Peking University to edit materials on Lin Biao and the Tao of Confucius and Mencius.
