Seventy years ago today, on April 11, 1955 (March 19, 1955), the "Kashmir Princess" passenger plane crashed. On April 11, 1955, the staff of the Chinese delegation, the staff of the Vietnamese delegation and the Chinese, Polish and Austrian journalists accompanying them to the Asian-African Conference totaled 11 people. They were the staff of the delegation: Shi Zhiang, Li Zhaoji, and Zhong Buyun; reporters: Shen Jiantu, Huang Zuomei, Du Hong, Li Ping, and Hao Fengge; the staff of the delegation of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, Wang Mingfang; the Polish journalist Stalets; and the Austrian journalist Yan Peide. In addition, there were the Indian senior pilot Captain De Ke Jattar and seven other aircraft maintenance and service personnel. They took off from Hong Kong for Jakarta for Bandung aboard an Air India Princess flight chartered by the delegation. The plane exploded into flames near Sarawak, North Borneo, and crashed into the sea, killing all on board. Now in Babaoshan Martyrs' Cemetery stands a tall monument with Premier Zhou's handwritten inscription: "Cemetery of the Martyrs Who Participated in the Asian-African Conference". The back of the stone tablet is engraved with the names and biographies of the eleven martyrs. There is also an inscription on the stone tablet that records the martyrdom of the martyrs. The last sentence of the inscription of the inscription is: "The martyrs who died gloriously for the cause of peace, independence and freedom are immortal!" According to the three lucky crew members who survived: co-pilot Dixit, navigator Patak, and ground mechanic Kania, the plane took off from Hong Kong at 12:15 on April 11. The weather was very good, the flight was completely normal, and close contact with the ground was maintained. At about 4:50 pm local time, it was flying normally over Natuna Island when suddenly an explosion was heard, and smoke entered the cabin. A fire alarm was issued in the luggage room. Therefore, the fire extinguisher was immediately turned on and sprayed into the luggage room, but it was ineffective. The captain then informed the passengers of the seriousness of the situation, and the cabin was filled with thick smoke at that time; but the eleven passengers sat in their original seats and were very calm. Following the advice of the flight attendants, they all put on life jackets. Then a flame broke out from outside the cabin and quickly spread to the right wing of the plane. At this point, the entire interior of the plane, including the cockpit, was filled with thick smoke. They rushed to the ground several times, and wanted to land at a nearby airport, but it was too late. Captain Jattar decided to land immediately on the water. The plane was completely unbalanced, and the descent was carried out under very difficult conditions. The plane hit the water quite violently, and the nose and fuselage split into two sections. The three of them were thrown out of the gap between the two sections of the plane and were thrown into the sea in an instant, and the nose and fuselage sank almost immediately. After being thrown overboard, they swam some way to a small island, where they were rescued by the British fast escort, the Dampier, and taken to Singapore.
