Union General Robert Edward Lee was born during the Civil War

Robert Edward Lee (January 19, 1807-October 12, 1870) was an American career soldier and the most outstanding general of the Confederacy during the Civil War. He eventually commanded the Allied forces as Commander-in-Chief. Like Hannibal and Irwin Romier in ancient times, his situation of defeating the many with fewer but ultimately losing the opponent earned him a long-term reputation. After the war, he actively promoted reconstruction and became a progressive university president in the final years of his life. General Lee maintains the image of a representative symbol of the Alliance and an important educator to this day.

He entered the United States Military Academy in 1825 and graduated in 1829. He distinguished himself during the Mexican-American War (1846 - 1848) and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. He became President of the Military Academy at West Point in 1852. He joined the Confederate States in 1861. In 1862, he served as Commander of the Army of Northern Virginia. On January 31, 1865, General Lee was promoted to Commander-in-Chief of the Confederate Armed Forces. He surrendered at Appomattox Court on April 9, 1865. In 1975, he was granted amnesty by President Gerald Ford and his citizenship was restored by the United States Congress.
