On this day, 43 years ago, on February 25, 1982 (February 2, 1982 in the lunar calendar), the famous linguist Zhao Yuanren passed away. Zhao Yuanren was born in 1892 in Changzhou, Jiangsu. The word Xuanzhong. Graduated from Nanjing Jiangnan Higher School in 1910. Later, he went to the United States to attend Cornell University and received a doctorate in philosophy. He was a former professor of physics at Cornell University. He returned to China in 1920 and served as a supervisor of the Research Department of Tsinghua University and a member of the Preparatory Committee for the Unification of Mandarin. In 1921, he served as a lecturer in Chinese at Harvard University. In 1922, he published his own romanization style. Later, he served as a supervisor of the Tsinghua Institute of Chinese Studies. In 1928, he served as director of the Language Group of the Institute of History and Linguistics, Academia Sinica, and was engaged in national dialect surveys. He went to the United States in 1938 and taught at the University of Hawaii, Yale University, and Harvard University. In 1945, he served as a representative of the China delegation to UNESCO and president of the American Linguistic Society. Later, he served as visiting professor of oriental studies at the University of California and academician of Academia Sinica. He has deep attainments in phonological theory, China phonology, Chinese dialects and Chinese grammar. He is the author of "New Poetry Rhythm of National Voice","Mandarin Questions", etc., translated "Alice's Wandering in Wonderland", and "Selected Songs of Zhao Yuanren". He died on February 25, 1982.
