There are 24 articles in total, with more than 40,000 words. The book runs through the argument that "old learning is the body and new learning is the use", advocating accepting the technology of Western capitalism while safeguarding the basic principles of feudal rule, and violently attacking the reformists 'doctrine of "opening a house and promoting civil rights." This book was deeply appreciated by Empress Dowager Cixi and Emperor Guangxu, and was able to "implement it with the power of the court and spread it all over the country without hesitation." Imperialism also praised it and successively translated it into English and French. In 1900, the New York edition was renamed "The Only Hope for China."
