The Geneva Conference was held on April 26, 1954
Seventy-one years ago today, on April 26, 1954 (March 24, 1954), the Geneva Conference was held. From April 26 to July 21, 1954, the diplomatic conference of the five countries of the Soviet Union, the United States, Britain, France and China was held at the League of Nations Building in Geneva. The conference mainly discussed how to peacefully resolve the Korean issue and the issue of restoring peace to Indochina. From April 27 to June 15, the central topic of the conference was how to peacefully resolve the Korean issue. In addition to the representatives of China, the Soviet Union and the DPRK, there were also representatives of South Korea and the fifteenth invading country of the United States. China, the DPRK and the Soviet Union put forward equal and reasonable proposals such as withdrawing all foreign troops from Korea and holding free elections for the reunification of North and South Korea. The United States attempted to use South Korea as a military base to sabotage the meeting, but failed to reach any agreement. The meeting focused on the restoration of peace in Indochina from May 8 to July 21. Participants included China, the Soviet Union, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, the Khmer (Cambodia), Laos (Laos) and South Vietnam. The meeting was chaired by the chief representatives of the Soviet Union and the United Kingdom in turn. The representatives of the United States and Vietnam did not attend the meeting seriously and did not sign the agreement. Due to the inability of France to continue the colonial war in Indochina, and the fact that the Vietnamese military and civilians achieved the victory of Dien Bien Phu on May 7 with the assistance of the Chinese people during the meeting, the agreement on the cessation of hostilities in Indochina was signed on July 21 and the final declaration was issued. The agreement provides for the immediate cessation of hostilities in the three Indochina countries; the demarcation of a temporary military demarcation line south of the 17th parallel in Vietnam; an international committee composed of India, Poland and Canada to monitor the implementation of the cessation of hostilities in the three countries; Vietnam, Laos and Khmer hold free general elections respectively to achieve reunification on the basis of democracy; the three countries prohibit the establishment of military bases on their territory by any foreign country and undertake not to participate in any military alliance; the participating countries undertake to respect the independence, unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the three countries and not interfere in their internal affairs. Although the United States did not sign the agreement and declaration, it stated that it would not use force or threat of force to hinder the above agreement. However, it turned out that the above-mentioned Geneva agreement was not implemented, and the war in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia broke out again in the 1960s. British Foreign Secretary Aiden Biden met with Zhou Enlai. Premier and Foreign Minister Zhou Enlai led a Chinese government delegation to Geneva. Premier and Foreign Minister Zhou Enlai met with French Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mendes France at the Geneva conference venue
