On April 20, 1949, the Nanjing Nationalist Government refused to sign the Internal Peace Agreement
On this day, 76 years ago, on April 20, 1949 (March 23, 1949 in the lunar calendar), the Nanjing National Government refused to sign the "Domestic Peace Agreement." In January 1949, Acting President Li Zongren expressed his willingness to hold peace negotiations with the Communist Party. In order to achieve peace, the delegation of the Communist Party of China headed by Zhou Enlai and the delegation of the National Government headed by Zhang Zhizhong held peace talks in Peiping, and the two sides reached the final amendment to the Domestic Peace Agreement. Under Chiang Kai-shek's control, the Kuomintang government refused to sign the peace agreement. The Kuomintang's fraud of fake peace talks was completely exposed. On April 21, 1949, Mao Zedong and Zhu De issued an order to march across the country. The Battle of Crossing the River began (Jiangyin to Hukou), and Nanjing was liberated on April 23. On the 23rd, Nanjing was occupied and the National Government was destroyed. Then the People's Liberation Army marched across the country with a devastating momentum to pursue and annihilate the remnants of the Kuomintang troops.
