On this day 49 years ago, on January 21, 1976 (December 21, 1975 lunar calendar), Mao Zedong proposed that Hua Guofeng serve as the acting premier of the State Council and preside over the work of the Central Committee. On January 21, 1976, Hua Guofeng, Ji Dengkui, and Chen Xilian, three vice premiers, proposed to ask the chairperson to determine a main responsible comrade to take the lead in handling the work of the State Council, and the three of them would do the specific work.
