Seventy-three years ago today, on May 8, 1952 (April 15, 1952), the Allied forces launched their largest air raid in North Korea. May 8, 1952. Allied fighter-bombers launched the largest airstrike of the Korean War. From dawn to dusk, napalm, bombs and machine guns attacked an ancient city in North Korea, Saian. The heavy bombardment seemed to have the dual purpose of destroying the Communist Party's supply centers and putting pressure on the Communist Party to achieve an armistice. The airstrikes began less than a day after Gen. Matthew B-Ritchie, the United Nations' top commander in North Korea, warned the Communists to finally accept or abandon the armistice plan. The heavy bombardment showed that the Allies were growing impatient with the Communist Party's delaying tactics in the armistice negotiations at Panmunjom. The bombing could also weaken the Communist state's ability to resume a large-scale campaign. Air Force reconnaissance planes reportedly spotted a large concentration of military supplies in Suan, 35 miles south of Pyongyang, the North Korean capital, last month.
