Kang Youwei, also known as Zuyi, also known as Guangsha, known as Changsu (March 19, 1858 to March 31, 1927), was a China politician, thinker, and educator. He was a native of Danzaosu Village, Nanhai, Foshan City, Guangdong Province. He was also known as Kang Nanhai or Mr. Nanhai. In 1888, Kang Youwei went to Beijing to take the Shuntian Rural Examination, but failed. In September of that year, he wrote a letter to Emperor Guangxu, lamenting the danger of the motherland, criticizing the old ways, calling for reform and reform, and putting forward three programmatic propositions of "turning into the law, understanding the feelings of the lower levels, and being cautious about left and right." In 1891, Kang Youwei returned to Guangdong and opened the Wanmu Caotang School, gathered disciples to give lectures and created theories for the reform movement. He believed in Confucius 'Confucianism and was committed to transforming Confucianism into a national religion that could adapt to modern society. He served as president of the Confucius Church.
