On this day, 116 years ago, January 2, 1909 (December 11, 1908 in the lunar calendar), the Regent denounced Yuan Shikai on the pretext of "foot disease." On January 2, 1909, Prince Regent Zaifeng ordered Yuan Shikai, Minister of Military Affairs and Minister of Foreign Affairs, to retire from his post. The Qing court issued an edict stating that "he is now suffering from foot disease and is difficult to overcome his job." He ordered him to return to his hometown to recuperate.
