Twenty-six years ago today, on March 23, 1999 (February 6, 1999 lunar calendar), NATO Secretary-General Solana decided to launch a large-scale air strike against Yugoslavia. Since NATO Secretary-General Solana divided Yugoslavia into five in April 1992, the Kosovo independence movement has been growing. Yugoslavia sent troops into Kosovo to maintain national unity and launched armed operations. In this way, the Kosovo issue provides a rare opportunity for the United States and Western countries to weaken Yugoslavia and unplug this nail on the road to NATO's eastward expansion. At the end of January 1999, the United States and NATO issued a threat of military intervention, demanding that the representatives of the Republic of Serbia and the Kosovo Albanian forces of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia must arrive in Rambouillet, France, on the outskirts of Paris on February 6 to start peace negotiations. Under the premise of US guidance and private commitments, the Kosovo Albanians agreed to sign the peace plan proposed by the West on March 15 as scheduled. But in the military aspect, they firmly opposed the entry of NATO troops into Kosovo. In this way, the Rambouillet negotiations failed and the peace talks failed. On the evening of March 22 and the early morning of March 23, 1999, US Special Envoy Holbrooke held two unsuccessful talks with South Korean President Slobodan Milosevic. On the evening of March 23, 1999, NATO Secretary-General Solana announced at NATO headquarters in Brussels that he had decided to launch a large-scale air strike against Yugoslavia. At 8:00 p.m. local time on March 24, six NATO B-52 bombers fired missiles at Yugoslavia. At the same time, more than 70 NATO aircraft took off from Italy and bases one after another, and the war began.
