Thirty years ago today, on October 4, 1995 (August 10, 1995 lunar calendar), our country's first desert highway was fully opened to traffic. On October 4, 1995, our country's first grade highway built in the mobile desert - the Tarim Desert Highway was officially opened to traffic today. Tiemur Dawamati, Vice Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, cut the ribbon for the breakthrough ceremony at zero kilometers of the Tarim Desert Highway. This 522-kilometer desert highway runs through the Taklamakan Desert from north to south. It is connected to the Oilfield Highway and National Highway 314 in the north and 315 in the south, of which the desert section is 446 kilometers long. The completion of this desert highway has not only created a precedent in our country, but also in the world for building long-distance graded highways in mobile deserts. The connection of the Tarim Desert Highway, like a golden bridge, has greatly shortened the transportation distance between the north and south of the Tarim Basin. It not only plays an important role in accelerating the exploration and development of oil and gas in the Tarim Basin, but also plays an important role in accelerating the development and construction of the southern Xinjiang area and promoting the economic development of Xinjiang.
