37 years ago today, May 8, 1988 (March 23, 1988, the lunar calendar), Mitterrand was re-elected as French President. François Mitterrand successfully defended his title in the French presidential election held on May 8, 1988 and was elected the 6th President of the Fifth Republic of France. Mitterrand was born on October 26, 1916, into a railway worker's family in Jarnac, Charente, France. He studied law, political science and literature at the University of Paris, and worked as a journalist and lawyer. During World War II, he participated in the resistance movement, during which he met Communists and began to embark on the left-wing path. In 1940, Mitterrand was injured in the Battle of Verdun, captured by the Germans and imprisoned in a concentration camp. He escaped twice but failed. After the third escape, he fled to the home of nurse Danielle to avoid arrest. Unexpectedly, the two fell in love at first sight and got married. It was a match made in heaven. Mitterrand is a veritable political veteran. He once served in the Vichy government and joined the cabinet 11 times in the turbulent Fourth Republic government. He has served successively as Minister of Veterans, Secretary of State for Intelligence at the Chancellery's Office, Minister of Overseas Territories, Minister of State, Minister of the Interior, Minister of State and Minister of Justice. In 1958, he opposed General Charles de Gaulle's return to power and has since been engaged in opposition party activities, serving as chairman of the Social Democratic Left Alliance and chairman of the Republican Institutional Congress. In 1971, he was elected first secretary of the Socialist Party. He ran for president twice, but lost both. He was defeated by General Charles de Gaulle in 1965 and lost to Giscard D'Estaing in 1974. However, he worked hard and never discouraged. He finally succeeded in running for president for the third time in 1981 and became the first Socialist President of the Fifth Republic of France. This was also the first Socialist President elected through universal suffrage in France's history. After Mitterrand came to power, he adhered to an independent foreign policy, strengthened relations with third world countries, advocated the alliance of Western Europe, maintained an alliance with the United States, and supported the US-China-Soviet Guidance Agreement. Politically, he advocated using socialism and freedom to transform the French political system. Economically, he advocated increasing taxes on the rich through "social cooperation" to reduce social injustice and increasingly serious imbalances. His "Eureka" plan aimed at strengthening scientific and technological cooperation in Western Europe has received the support of the vast majority of Western European countries. Mitterrand is an influential figure in international politics. He also loves literature, history and place, and music. He is praised as a knowledgeable president, the most literary head of state in Europe, and a politician who enjoys literature. In his decades-long political career, he has always regarded literature as his first hobby. Every day, in addition to busy government activities, he always read for two hours. He said: "Don't think that my life is full of politics.""Literature will always be my paradise." He is still writing books after work. He has written many books, mainly "My Reality","Constant Change","Bees and Architects","China Faces Challenges", etc. News raw data sources → https://www.abtool.cn/today_detail/12k3.html 17WorldNews[2025.09.28-06:34] 访问:64
