On this day 372 years ago, on April 20, 1653 (March 23, 1653 lunar calendar), Oliver Cromwell dissolved the British Parliament. Oliver Cromwell Oliver Cromwell was born into a declining new noble family in Huntingdonshire. As a young man, he studied at a famous Puritan college in Cambridge and was influenced by Puritan ideas. He was elected to Parliament in 1628. In the 1930s, he moved to Cambridgeshire. He helped local farmers oppose the actions of noble landlords to drain the swamp against the interests of farmers, so he was very popular in the eastern counties. In 1640, he was elected to the "Short Council" and the "Long Council" as a representative of Cambridgeshire. In the Long Council, he stood with members who were firmly opposed to the royal party. Participated in the formulation of documents such as the "Great Protest". In 1642, the English Civil War began, and he stood on the side of the revolutionary camp of Parliament, and made many achievements with his own "cavalry army". In 1645, Parliament authorized Cromwell to reorganize the army, and he formed a "new model army" based on the cavalry army. He commanded this army and defeated the army of the royal party. On January 30, 1649, under the pressure of the people, he executed King Charles I in the name of Parliament and the army. In May, England was declared a republic and became a de facto military dictator. He suppressed the Dig movement and sent troops to Ireland. On April 20, 1653, he dispersed Parliament and appointed himself "Protector of the country", but the domestic economic situation continued to deteriorate and class contradictions became increasingly acute. Cromwell never stabilized the situation. He died of illness in 1658.
