Graduated from Tsinghua University in 1933. In 1938, he received his doctorate from Cambridge University in the United Kingdom and returned to China. He has served successively as a professor at Southwest Union University and Tsinghua University, a professor and vice president of Peking University, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, vice chairman of the Chinese Physical Society, vice chairman of the Chinese Society for Metrology and Testing, director of the Science Physics Textbook Editorial Committee of the Ministry of Education, editor-in-chief of "China Encyclopedia Physics", editor-in-chief of "Journal of Physics", deputy editor-in-chief of "Chinese Science", vice chairman of the Central Committee of the Jiusan Society, member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and deputy to the National People's Congress. He made important contributions in various fields of theoretical physics such as thermodynamics and statistical physics.
