On this day 360 years ago, on February 6, 1665 (December 22, 1664 in the lunar calendar), Queen Anne of England was born. Queen Anne (AnneofGreatBritain also translated as Queen Ann, February 6, 1665 - August 1, 1714), Queen of the Kingdom of Great Britain. Anne was the second daughter of James II and Queen Anne Hyde. In 1707, the Parliament of England merged with the Parliament of Scotland to achieve a true union of the two countries. Due to Anne's frailty and concerns about having no children, Viscount Bolingblock, the Tory leader and secretary of state, contacted Anne's younger brother, James Edward, the old pretender to the throne, hoping that he would renounce his Catholic faith in exchange for the right to the throne. But he refused. Before her death in 1714, Queen Anne appointed the Duke of Shrewsbury as the government's crucial chancellor of the exchequer, ensuring that the throne would be inherited by the Protestant Elector of Hanover, George.
