On September 4, 1998, the worst air crash in Swiss history took place
Twenty-seven years ago today, September 4, 1998 (July 14, 1998 in the lunar calendar), the most serious air disaster in Switzerland's history occurred. Canadian Marine Police is searching for the wreckage of the crashed Swissair passenger plane. A Swissair flight flying directly from New York to Geneva, Switzerland, suddenly crashed in the early morning of September 4 while flying to the Atlantic Ocean 60 kilometers south of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, killing all 215 passengers and 14 flight attendants on board. This was the most serious air crash in Swissair history. Before the plane crashed, the pilot reported to the ground control center that smoke had been found in the cabin. The plane then lost contact with the ground and disappeared from the radar display. Americans lost the most lives in the crash, with 137, followed by the Swiss, with a total of 41 crew members. Swiss teenager Hingis, who finished playing a tennis match in the United States, originally planned to take this flight home, but later changed his mind.
