August 1, 1291 Switzerland becomes independent
On this day, 734 years ago, on August 1, 1291 (July 6, 1291 in the lunar calendar), Switzerland became independent. In August 1291, Switzerland's three valley communities: Uri, Schwyz and Untewalden signed a Tri-Canton Alliance Agreement. The Alliance Treaty stipulates that the three must help each other against all internal and external enemies; adopt common laws to ensure local stability; differences between the Alliance must be resolved peacefully through consultation; It also stipulates that no party to the alliance shall accept law enforcement officials who are not local or appointed for the sake of money. This alliance agreement is the earliest documented agreement in Swiss history. Therefore, today's Swiss people regard August 1291 as the birth day of the Swiss Confederation, and August 1 every year is designated as Swiss National Day.
