He is a leader of the guerrillas in Nicaragua and a hero of the people. In 1926 he took up arms in support of Vice President Juan Batista Sacasa in his bid for the presidency. When the U.S. Marines intervened in 1927, he led hundreds of people to retreat into the mountains of northern Nicaragua. Sandino laid down his arms only after the withdrawal of the U.S. Marines and Sacasa became president in January 1933. Killed by the National Guard on February 23, 1934.
