January 5, 2004 Hong Kong's first subway arson case
On January 5, 2004 (December 14, 2003 in the lunar calendar), Hong Kong's first subway arson case: no death was sentenced to life imprisonment. The 2004 Hong Kong MTR arson incident occurred on January 5, 2004. It was the first train arson incident in Hong Kong MTR since its opening in 1979. The incident caused minor injuries to 14 people. The 65-year-old man Yan Jinzhong entered the gate at MTR Tsuen Wan Station between 7:30 and 9:00 a.m. that day and boarded a Tsuen Wan Line train No. 061 heading for Central Station. When the train left Tsim Sha Tsui Station and entered the MTR tunnel under Victoria Harbour to Admiralty Station, Yan Admiralty lit a plastic bottle containing Thinner (thinner) with a lighter in the truck compartment at the front of the train (the vehicle accident number: A167; now restored). Ji Shijie, former secretary-general of the League for Social Democracy, who was then an administrative officer and is now a trainee lawyer, immediately stopped him, but the plastic bottle was still successfully ignited. The fire spread rapidly along with the flammable liquid and produced a large amount of smoke. The captain driving the train decided to drive the train to Admiralty Station and broadcast a message informing passengers to prepare for evacuation. During the escape, Ji Shijie and other passengers tried to intercept Yan Jinzhong but failed. Yan Jinzhong fled the Admiralty MTR Station at 9:15 and returned to his residence at 12:25 noon the next day. The day after the incident, the Correctional Services Department received a letter from Yim Jin-chung describing his plan to blow up the MTR to his friends in prison. The police arrested him quickly. Yim Jin-chung confessed under caution: "(Hong Kong Cantonese) The government seized six of my cars. I am a disaster in Admiralty." In Chinese, it means "The government confiscated my six cars. I caused a disaster at Admiralty Station to make fun of them. My name is Yim Jin-chung, so I worked at Admiralty Station." According to police investigations, Yan Jinzhong himself had limited mobility and used a bicycle modified by himself to travel. Since he had been charged with driving without a license plate and sentenced to prison for the modified bicycle, he committed the crime based on a retaliatory mentality. The psychiatrist also confirmed that the defendant suffered from delusion. Yan Jinzhong was finally sentenced to life imprisonment by the High Court on January 25, 2006. He was the first person to be sentenced to life imprisonment for pure arson (but without causing death).
