January 5, 1983 The former Soviet nuclear-powered satellite "Cosmos 1402" lost control
Forty-two years ago today, on January 5, 1983 (November 22, 1982 in the lunar calendar), the nuclear-powered satellite "Cosmos 1402" of the former Soviet Union lost control. On January 5, 1983, the TASS news agency of the former Soviet Union announced that the nuclear-powered reconnaissance satellite Cosmos 1402 launched by the Soviet Union (launched on August 30, 1982) disappeared in orbit and will crash soon. When the news came out, the whole world was shocked. Because this satellite was strongly bombarded by neutrons generated in the atomic reactor during its five-month operation, it has become radioactive and is likely to carry surplus nuclear fuel. Countries have called on countries with tracking and intercepting capabilities to predict the falling date and point of the disaster in time in order to cope with unexpected events. At 6: 21 on January 22nd, the main part of the disaster star fell into the North Indian Ocean.
